Have you ever heard of a bucket list?  It is a list of things you want to do before you die.  But you are a little young to be thinking about death (I hope).  You should be thinking about the future.  I assume many of you are thinking about career and maybe family but what about thinking about yourself? You have maybe sixty more years on this earth, what else do you want to do?  You shouldn’t just live for the moment, but you shouldn’t let the years just pass you by, either.  You need to plan things to develop yourself as a person and be interesting to your kids and grandkids, or nieces and nephews, whatever path you take.  When I was eighteen, I wrote a wish list of things I wanted to do during my life.  I don’t like to be bored and I am perfectly willing to entertain myself.  There were things I saw on TV or read in books that fascinated me and I wanted to do them, so I made a life list, things I could do during my life that would make it more exciting.

You have years to live, so you don’t want to do everything in just a few years.  Some things take years to master (languages, music skills) or just something you want to see or a place you want to go.  When I wrote my list, I considered what takes a lot of energy and strength, those are the things to do during my youth (backpacking Europe, climbing a pyramid) and what takes wisdom and/or money (novelist, helicopter pilot) for my later years.  Travel the risky, dangerous places first and see my own country last was a good idea. A bad knee would have kept me from climbing to the top of Ankor Wat now so I am glad I did that 10 years ago. When I eventually explore Canada in my senior years I doubt I will have to outrun a grizzly bear!

And skills.  I can do magic, juggle, play several instruments, including the daigum (Korean bamboo flute).  I studied dance when I was young and belly dancing in Korea.  I always wanted birds and so I got some here rather than wait until I got home. There can always be an excuse not to do something but you should do or learn them whenever the opportunity presents itself. You never know when or even if the chance will present itself again. I haven’t exhausted my list yet.  A harp and a guitar are waiting for their turn. And sometimes you get a second chance.  My great passion in high school and university was volleyball and I was on those teams.  When I graduated I thought it was over, but I joined a university volleyball club and have extended my playing years by 14 years so far.  You have to keep your eyes open for opportunities to keep some of your old skills alive too.

Find a balance between friends and family.  I didn’t go out very much when I was young.  I did play a lot of sports and did other activities at school but I spent a lot of time with my parents and grandparents, too. My sisters nagged me to go out much more than I did, but I am glad I didn’t because my parents died just after my university graduation. I know a lot about them, how they met, their childhood, all sorts of fascinating stories and another set of skills like cooking and woodworking (Mom) and driving and using tools (Dad).  I have few regrets about my life. No one gets to have none, but I like to limit mine.  Although I watch TV and play computer games, they are not the main focus of my life.  I know that I cannot press a reset button and get back any of the time I let slip through my fingers. There are no extra lives.  You don’t have to make every moment count but many of them should, even if you are only making memories for other people of you. Most importantly, don’t write your list in stone.  You can add, alter or delete from your list as you also grow and change.  Some things remain important for life, others for a brief moment.  But at the end of it you want to look back and know that you did some things that were fun and exciting and left behind some accomplishments.  That you lived your life.
