During the interview, they said, “We should have participated in the Tokyo Olympics, but due to Covid-19, we had to show our talents at AGT instead. Among Jeonju University students, only two of us were selected for the show.”AGT is a popular audition program broadcasted by NBC. The World Taekwondo Federation Demonstration Team advanced to the quarterfinals by sounding a golden buzzer in the preliminary round held in June 2021. The video of their preliminary round gained a lot of attentions, recording about 18 million YouTube views in two months. In addition, in the announcement of the quarterfinal results on August 26th, they were called as one of the five teams that proceed to the next round and advance to the semi-finals.

In the semi-finals held on September 2nd, 3 teams out of the 11 teams were selected by the viewer’s advanced vote, 1 team by the on-site vote, and 1 team by the moderator’s decision. The performance lasted for about 3 minutes and was performed with a ‘poomsae’ and a performance under the theme of “Don’t lose hope” In this semi-final match, the four judges gave a standing ovation and said that “It was the best performance of the day.”

The “AGT” finals were broadcast live from Hollywood’s Dolby Theater on September 16th, the same day as the Academy Awards. In the final, a total of 10 teams competed against the 5 teams confirmed in the semi-finals and 5 teams determined through the second semi-finals. The World Taekwondo Demonstration Team failed to make it to the top 5 out of 10 finalists. However, they left a deep impression on the judges and the audience in this final, saying during the post-interview that “Taekwondo is a sport that delivers peace and hope beyond simple martial arts, which shows the value of more than sports and spreads hope.”
