Now that we are in the fourth week of the new semester, many of you may be starting to feel a little stress from your English classes. Maybe you don’t understand everything your professors are saying, or you don’t feel completely confident to answer questions in front of the class yet. Whatever it is, trust me, you are not alone. Learning a new language is a challenging, and often a stressful experience, but that is no reason for you to be discouraged. As an English instructor, I am often asked what the best way to learn English is. Unfortunately, there isn’t a simple answer to this, but I do believe there are a few things you can do to learn any language more efficiently, and make the process more enjoyable as well.

1) Find Your Reason: If you are studying only to pass a test, then chances are good you will not enjoy learning very much and will not retain most of what you study. Try to remember that learning a language allows you to access so much more of the world and experience many new cultures, hobbies, and relationships. Try to find your own motivation for learning English and it will give you that excitement to learn more.

2) Make Mistakes: One of the biggest obstacles for people learning a language is their fear of making mistakes or looking foolish in front of others. This is perfectly natural, but you can’t let it prevent you from learning. Making mistakes is essential to learning, and the only people that don’t make mistakes are those who don’t try. If you can get over that fear and remember that everyone makes mistakes, you will find that you not only learn from your mistakes, but you can also have fun making them.

3) Just Do It: The only way to get better at speaking is by speaking. Studying thousands of vocabulary words and complex grammar patterns is not how you learned your first language, so why would it be a good way to learn a second language? Learn enough vocabulary and grammar for simple conversation and then start practicing. Talk to your professors, your classmates, foreign exchange students, and anyone else that you can, to start developing your speaking and listening skills. I always tell my students that conversation is like exercise. You can read about it and understand how exercise works, but the only way to get in shape is to actually exercise, and do it on a regular basis.

4) Have Fun: Learning a new language can be challenging, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be enjoyable. Don’t think that learning is only done in the classroom. You can learn a lot more by simply doing the things you already enjoy in English. Watch movies and TV, listen to music, learn about new foods, study art and dance, read books and comics, play games and sports, and of course, travel and meet new friends. This is what learning a new language is all about: sharing new cultures and experiences. Just have fun with it!
