The dry season began

And countless gnus stood on the bank

To cross the river toward a green meadow.
Hungry crocodiles in the river were waiting

For the gnus to jump into the water.
Then I saw on the screen

A few gnus, kicking the bank with hoofs,

Immerse themselves in the river not toward the  other shore but crocodiles.
While the crocodiles eat their fill, ripping gnus

And turning the river into a bloodbath,

The gnus finish crossing the river.
They owe their lives to the death of others

So, like vegan monks, they don’t lie down to sleep

And they tear off rough grass with the tongue.
Some day when they cross the river again,

A few of them will walk toward crocodile’s muzzles

Instead of the other shore.
