Now we are near the end of the semester everyone has been waiting for. Since it comes with a vacation, some students may be agonizing over what to do to spend this summer productively. For these students who have not made any plans yet, I would recommend volunteering at local festivals.
Each local government holds various local festivals every year. In a nutshell, local festivals are events of local governments, which are being carried out to promote and preserve regional characteristics. It is almost impossible for them to hire fulltime professionals to operate these event for several days, because they don’t have enough money to keep them all the year. Therefore, volunteers play a really important role for local festivals.
Volunteers at local festivals participate in the festival to carry out ancillary tasks. They help visitors to find venues, provide them with information, assist them in the hands-on experience booths, work as interpreters and/or translators, and check out the facilities at the festival site. Volunteers at local festivals are usually given a uniform, some souvenirs, and a certificate for their service hours.
The biggest advantage of local festival volunteering is that you can enjoy the festival while doing volunteer work. Lee Hye-rin, a junior of the Department of Health Management, has experience volunteering at the Jeonju Hanji Cultural Festival. “I was able to catch two birds at the same time, volunteering and enjoying the festival. I worked with festival organizers and learned some in-depth contents. I looked into what they planned to do and what effects they wanted to happen. I was not a simple visitor who just come to enjoy the festival. It was fun to be there on the scene all day because it’s a volunteer activity,” she said of the merits of volunteering at the local festival.
Another advantage: You can learn to work in cooperation with others, whose personalities and backgrounds are all different from yours. They will not ask how old you are and where you are from. You can acquire a lot of interpersonal and social adaptation skills. Through volunteering, you can build your own way of taking responsibility and accomplishing self-discipline. It is a totally new experience.
